Information for the patient
How long does the treatment last?
The length of the treatment mainly depends on the amount of root canals and the level of difficulty of the treatment. Most treatments last between 1 hour and 2 hours, and are finished off in one session.
Some treatments (including re-treatments, removal of instruments, calcified canals, etc.) do however require more time. A second session is generally required in such cases.
How much does treatment cost?
This is a non-subsidised practice. The cost depends on a number of factors including the tooth which needs to be treated, the level of difficulty, the materials used and the treatment duration. We can always make an estimate of the costs in advance.
On average, half of the cost of treatment will be refunded by the health insurance fund (mutuality). If you have additional insurance cover for dental care, you may be entitled to extra reimbursement. Read through your policy carefully to make sure.
If the appointment is not honored without timely annulation (before 24h), the reserverd time will be charged.
What methods of payment are accepted?
You can pay by bancontact (preferably) and cash. Payments via bank transfer are not accepted.
Will there still be pain after the treatment?
For the first few days following root canal treatment, patients often experience unpleasant post-operative pain around the tooth which has been treated. The sensitivity can sometimes persist for 2 to 3 weeks, primarily during chewing or even by touching the tooth or the gums at the roots. This is completely normal and is due to the infection reaction in the bone, which occurs following root canal treatment.
If swelling occurs, or considerable pressing or throbbing pain, and if you also feel nauseous, it is likely to be an acute resurgence of the infection. If this happens, it will generally be 48 hours after the treatment. You should contact us in this case, as you will need to take antibiotics and suitable painkillers.
What is the prognosis of the tooth after the treatment?
The success rate of an endodontic treatment is around 90-95% if infection of the jawbone is still undetectable on the X-ray. If infection is detectable, the success rate falls to 85%. In cases of endodontic re-treatment, this ranges between 75 and 90%.
In addition, there are complicating factors which can influence this success rate. The prognosis of each individual situation will always be assessed in advance.
A tooth with a prognosis which is difficult to predict will be monitored as closely as possible after the endodontic treatment. After 6 to 12 months, a check-up appointment will be made.
